CT GMO Labeling Laws are the Talk of the Town

It's an important time if you are a supporter of GMO labeling laws (and if you are not a supporter, you should ask yourself why you aren't.) The topic of GMOs (genetically modified organisms) may sound complicated and may cause you to think that someone else will worry about it for you. If you live in CT and eat food - any food - you owe it to yourself to learn more and at least raise a hand of support in some way as this is an important topic.

Did You Know?

- More than 80% of processed foods at U.S. grocery stores are likely to contain genetically engineered ingredients. And you wouldn't know it, because the FDA doesn't require labels for foods with genetically engineered (GE) ingredients ‒ also called genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Nearly 50 countries — including the European Union, South Korea, Brazil and China—already require labeling of genetically engineered foods. We have the right to make informed choices about the food we eat and feed our families.

What's Happening

Breaking news from the CT General Assembly’s Environment Committee: The public hearing for the Genetically Modified Foods labeling bill, HB 5117, will be on Wednesday, Feb 22 in room 1C of the Legislative Office Building (LOB) in Hartford. Learn more about what you can do to show your support by visiting The Fairfield Green Food Guide.
Fairfield's own Analiese Paik, founder of the Fairfield Green Food Guide will be presenting testimony and would love to
see a show of support in Hartford. If you can't be there, you can submit your testimony electronically.

Glen Colello owner of Catch a Healthy Habit in Fairfield tells us that Dr. Jeffrey Smith, Executive Director of the Institute of Responsible Technology,  will be giving a legislative presentation at the Connecticut state capitol in Hartford, Room 1E, on Friday, March 2nd from 10am-11am.  Please join Jeffrey as he educates the legislature about the dangers of GMOs and the importance of Representative Richard Roy's efforts to get genetically modified food labeled. Your participation is key to letting your representatives know how critical this issue is. Please email stacey@responsibletechnology.org to let us know if you are able to join Jeffrey Smith at this important event and feel free to bring others if you plan to attend.

Most of us can read the writing on the wall; we just assume it's addressed to someone else.  ~Ivern Ball
